Religion and population
The most common religion in Guatemala is Roman Catholicism. Although, Protestantism religion is growing. More than one third of Guatemalans are now Protestant. Approximately 1% of the population professes a native Indian religion, although the Maya Catholicism is stronlgy mixed with their original use.
Mestizos and the white people account for nearly 60% of the population, they are called Ladino's. The remaining 40% consist Indigenas, better known as Indians, the majority of Maya. In Guatemala there are 23 different groups of Maya folks. They all have their own different language. Other indigenous peoples are the Xinca and Garifuna (Spaanse Academie Groningen, 2013).
