Disciplines in the Netherlands
The secretariat is the contact person for the parents and the child to make appointments.
The (medical) social worker and the nurse are the people who are also the ‘first’ contact persons. They will see the patient most of the time.
When things on school, or with the child himself, doesn’t go like the parents wanted to go they can ask for a remedial. He/she can help by talking with the family and can answer questions.
The plastic surgeon operates the cleft of the child. He will be assist by the anesthesiologist . He is taking care of the narcosis.
The orthodontist takes care of the shape and position of the upper and lower jaw. When a bracket is necessary, the orthodontist will place the bracket.
The ENT-doctor is inspecting the throat, nose and hearing area. He can give advices for operation, and also operate/ give treatments to the child when this is necessary.
The audiologist is the expert of the hearing part. He can give advices and answering questions about the ear and the hearing of the child. He is inspecting the hearing (development).
The speech teacher and speech therapist take care of the development of the speech, language and voice.
The prosthetic takes care of the palate plate after birth. And also for additions of the denture.
The dentistry is taking care of the correction of the upper and lower jaw.
The genetic expert is testing if the cleft of the child is genetic or not.
The gynecolist makes a echo. She can show the parents if the baby has a cleft. If the baby has a cleft, she will announce the family at the cleft team. So that the family get well informed about a cleft before the birth.
